Status of the bursary scholarship funding landscape in SA 2013
A dichotomy prevails in South Africa in that high unemployment coexists alongside skills shortages. In essence South Africa is not producing sufficient professionals in key economic fields to meet the demands of the economy. Compounding the problem is the fact that there is an uneven production of professionals across race groups and that the schooling system is unable to produce sufficient matriculants with good quality pass rates to gain access to priority professions. In recognition of the fact that the production of professionals is a medium- to long-term initiative that is impacted on by the entire skills pipeline (schooling, higher education, professional bodies and the workplace), a multi-stakeholder Technical Task Team (TTT) was established to purposefully interrogate the problem faced and put forward a set of recommendations to the HRDC for consideration….
