Summary of the Report:
The Mathematics and Science Standing Committee (MSSC), as part of the HRDC, was established in
September 2016. The MSSC was mandated to focus on the improvement of school outcomes for
Mathematics and Science in South Africa. The MSSC approached this task by focusing on teacher
education, both those that are in pre-service and in-service. We engaged with Higher Education
Institutions, Department of Basic Education, Department of Higher Education, DST-NRF, and NGOs,
and discussed what mathematics and science teachers leaving university need to know, both in terms
of scope and depth of knowledge, as well as how to continue their development through in-service
training. This report narrates the five years of work and workshops that have been conducted over
the past five years
