Background

At the meeting of 10 June 2016, after a presentation by Prof Servaas van der Berg of Stellenbosch University on the literacy of South African learners at the Foundation phase of schooling, Council took the decision to establish a Standing Committee which will focus on the improvement of outcomes in schooling in relation to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines including languages. The MSSC was duly established in September 2016 to focus specifically on the improvement of the outcomes of Maths and Science in schooling. Since its establishment the MSSC has participated in a number of forums looking at the improvement of the quality of schooling through the improvement of teacher training in both pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher education.
